Home to the musings of a radiation oncologist - with a slant on protons and dose and optimizing cancer outcomes.
Hello and welcome!
My name is Mark Storey and I’m a radiation oncologist. I’ve been in practice now for a little over 20 years. About 4.5 years ago now, I picked up and moved my practice in an effort to learn more about proton therapy - I thought then, and think now, it has great promise to help minimize toxicity and cure more patients.
If you’ve read much on protons, you know that they can be controversial. They have great potential to be a stepwise improvement to reduce toxicity but the facilities are very expensive to build and the top level data - randomized controlled trials - are lacking. There are many reasons why they should work to improve patient outcomes, but it has been harder to prove these benefits in clear ways. In today’s world where controversy rises to the top of social sites, I needed a separate place for these articles with more separation from my professional site.
I’m an engineer and math / science guy since way back and I enjoy looking at technology in the field of radiation oncology. But I’ve also done quite a bit on the business side of our field and in medicine over two decades. The goal of this Substack is to look deeper at important articles and issues and often times, at least consider a different perspective - after all the mainstream narrative is quite easy to find. And I often simply land on different perspective so during year one at least, this has been quite easy. I talk about broad context often and like to see items appear across various cancer disease sites.
Hopefully an open and honest search for better centering on issues critical to radiation oncology. Data driven but I try to integrate my past and stories to help drive home most technical discussions.

Site content is mine. The articles are personal reviews of what I see. I will do my best to call balls and strikes as a neutral but informed party. If you think I messed up or missed something (which I will) - please contact me or comment - and if I messed up I reserve the right to make changes and update articles appropriately - will try to note at bottom of any updated post
I’m part time these days. No financial conflicts to disclose. No entity is paying me for anything beyond my part time day job. Even there, I’m hourly. No RVU bonus. No bonus for the facility doing well. Paid the same for protons or IMRT or 3D. A part time practice of one physician - as independent as I can get - purposefully structured that way.
